# Goals

> Posting auto-updating progress bars for member count, boosts, roles, or any number you set.

A goal is a progress bar posted to a channel that updates itself. Use it for a member milestone, a boost target, a recruitment drive, or anything else you can put a number on.

## What a goal can track

| Source | Progress comes from |
| - | - |
| **Member count** | How many members the server has |
| **Boosts** | The server's current boost count |
| **Role members** | How many members hold a chosen role |
| **Manual** | A number you set yourself with `/goal set` |

The first three update on their own. Manual goals are for anything the bot cannot see, such as money raised or sign-ups on another site, and you move them with `/goal set` or nudge them with `/goal add`.

## Setting one up

Navigate to [**Goals**](https://bot.bifrost.gg/go/goals) in the dashboard, choose the source, the target, and the channel. The bot posts the bar and keeps it current on a poller, so it stays accurate without anyone touching it.

Goals are presentational, so they need no member permissions. Nobody can interact with a goal by accident.

## Required permissions

| Action | Permission key |
| - | - |
| Viewing settings | `goals.config.view_config` |
| Creating and editing goals | `goals.config.manage_config` |

`/goal set` and `/goal add` also require the manage key, since moving a manual goal is editing it.
