A member runs /afk with an optional reason. While they are away, anyone who mentions them gets a short reply saying they are AFK and how long ago they left. The note clears itself the moment that member sends any message in the server. The note is per server, not global. Setting one in one server does not affect any other.

How the notices are kept under control

Three rules stop this turning a busy channel into a wall of bot replies:
  • Only mentions typed into the message count. Replying to an older message from an away member does not trigger a notice, and neither does a role ping that happens to include them.
  • One notice per away member per channel per ten minutes. Ten people calling for the same person produce one reply, not ten.
  • The notice shows the away member’s display name rather than pinging them, so being told somebody is away never wakes them up.

What the person calling for them can do

Each notice carries two buttons: Held messages and watchers belong to that away session. Setting a new AFK note starts a fresh one, so nothing carries over from a previous absence.

Returning

Any message in the server clears the note. The bot replies with a short confirmation that removes itself after ten seconds, and DMs the member anything that was held for them. If their DMs are closed the held messages cannot be delivered, which is why the in-channel confirmation says how many there were.

Required permissions

Everyone can use it out of the box. To restrict it, deny that key on @everyone and allow it on the roles that should have it. Switching AFK off, either as a module or by disabling the /afk command under , stops the automatic replies as well as the command.
