Why it visits
HeimdallBot only fetches a page because a Discord server admin pointed it there. It does not wander the web looking for content.- Knowledge base imports. A server admin imports a page or deep-crawls a site so that Odin, Heimdall’s AI assistant, can answer their members’ questions from it. Usually it is their own documentation, wiki or help centre.
- Weekly re-checks. Each page imported that way is checked about once a week to keep the copy current. The check sends
If-None-MatchandIf-Modified-Since, so an unchanged page usually costs you one bodiless304. - Watched sites. An admin can ask for a site they imported to be watched for new pages. A watched site is re-crawled about once a week, visiting up to 100 pages, and at most 25 new pages are added each time.
- Link checks. When someone posts a link in a server that uses the attachment blocker, Heimdall may look at that one page to tell whether it is a GIF or a video. It reads at most the first 256 KB, and remembers the answer for up to a day.
How it behaves
- It honours robots.txt (RFC 9309) for every knowledge base fetch, redirects included. A
HeimdallBotgroup applies if you have one, otherwise your*group does.- If robots.txt returns a 4xx, there is no robots.txt and every page may be fetched. The exception is
429 Too Many Requests, which HeimdallBot takes as a reason to fetch nothing from your site that time. - If it returns a 5xx or times out, HeimdallBot tries once more, then fetches nothing from your site that time.
- If robots.txt returns a 4xx, there is no robots.txt and every page may be fetched. The exception is
- It spaces its requests out. Each crawl, import or weekly check sends at most two requests a second to one site, and fewer if your robots.txt sets a
Crawl-delay. Two of them running at once, for example two Discord servers importing your site at the same moment, are paced separately. A delay longer than 10 seconds is treated as 10. - It honours
noindexandnofollowwhile crawling. That covers<meta name="robots">,<meta name="HeimdallBot">and theX-Robots-Tagheader. Links markedrel="nofollow",ugcorsponsoredare never followed. - A deep crawl stays small. It stays on the one site, visits at most 100 pages, and stops after 5 minutes.
- It may ask for a Markdown version. On documentation sites that serve one, such as Mintlify, GitBook and Docusaurus, it asks for the page’s
.mdversion first. This is usually smaller than the HTML. - It does not run JavaScript, and does not log in.
Blocking or limiting it
To keep HeimdallBot off your whole site, add this to your robots.txt:HeimdallBot.
